ABOUT
Thanks for taking some time to check out my website and portfolio – I’m glad you’re here! I’m Alexander, a graphic designer and visual communicator who specializes in brand experience and digital marketing. But hey, my story is made up of more than just the bullet points listed on my resume…
Who I am as a PERSON
From the start, I’ve always had a deep curiosity for the way people work; the way the mind works. I took an interest in observing the way people act and interact from a young age, which eventually evolved into a passion for expressing myself – the way I act and interact.
I had gone from acting, to writing, to eventually landing on visual communication and graphic design. Beginning in middle school, it was creating DIY mini-movies for YouTube with my best friend, all with a very loose plot line but plentiful special effects and fake fighting. Next came an attempt at novel writing, exploring my interest in zombies through a story titled 'Infected'. I made it thirteen chapters in until I fizzled out and moved on to my next passion project. I participated in a local acting program, performing (I use that word lightly) in four productions before deciding it wasn’t my thing. Finally in high school, I enrolled in the Digital Design career technology program and felt like I had found the best avenue for my creative expression – one that gave me the ideal balance of creativity and functionalism.
Regardless of the venue for my own expression, I always had felt a deep inspiration from all forms of creativity – books, films, music, fashion, design in general; they all made me feel something that made me want to take my own stab at creating something (and thus my portfolio theme of ‘feeling’ was born years later). Career-wise, I initially dreamed of being an actor, later a writer, later a psychologist. I’ve always believed in the concept that the mind is essentially everything (at least to our conscious selves), and really considered pursuing a career in psychology. My compromise with design is that visual communication is a form of psychology, in that it affects the way people feel and perceive.
As a person I aim to always push for self-growth, connection with community, and freedom of expression. Whether I like it or not, I’m often both guided and inspired by emotion and empathy, which over time have synthesized to form my ultimate life goal - to always contribute to a more equitable, free, and just society while living each day with compassion and an unending willingness to learn and grow.
Who I am as a DESIGNER
I’ve always told others that sometimes I really don’t feel like a “creative type”. What I think I mean though is that I’m more of a creative problem-solver than an artist. I like to work things out, find where things fit, and bring the big picture together. Ask me to draw though, and you’ll quickly find out I’m not your guy. As a designer, I bring the whole package – not only can I create visual assets, but I can design an experience, bring a brand to life, or explore new ways to connect with an audience. I know my way around Adobe Creative Suite of course, but I’m not stuck in a “designer bubble” where all I know is content creation and asset management. As a designer, I like to be involved in the bigger picture, work with others, and put out work I’m proud of.
Who I am as a COLLABORATOR
I don’t want working with me to feel like work. In a collaborative setting I like to have open and honest communication, making sure everyone has space to voice their input and collectively make decisions on the task at hand. I’m the team member who will always be looking for ways to make things more efficient, to take things to the next level, and to always consider the end-user’s perspective. As a collaborator, I’m comfortable both leading or following a lead, but aim to keep work fair and efficient regardless.
